Thanks for the inspiration! I was looking for a cheap, efficient way to get my kayak off the floor. Has laying your kayaks on the side caused any shape change in the kayaks?
Thanks.
The kayaks have been up there for several months in heat and cold and still look pretty good. I probably need to bring them down and rotate them just for good measure.
I was looking at your Garage Kayak Rack. Now that you have had this set up for a long time has laying your kayaks on the side caused any shape change or dents?
So far so good. I haven't noticed any shape problems. I'm supporting the boats near the bulkheads so I think that helps.

I noticed this guy built something similar to yours but he lays the boats flat. He had to use a PVC post on top of the shelf to make it work.
Mike,
It's been a while since you implemented this, Any long term modifications to the original plans? Are you happy with this solution? Looks too simple to not work, but why hasnt anyone else marketed such an easy solution? AO
I never had a problem with my homemade rack. I'm getting ready to build another one at my new house.
The closest thing I've seen commercially is the Martin Creek racks: www.martincreek.com, but they're rather expensive.
I plan on buying this J-Cradle Wall Mounts
They look sweet http://www.oakorchardcanoe.com/rackaccessories.htm
Wanted to say thanks for this. I had planned on doing some sort of wall storage for my two 13'8 boats but wasn't sure if I needed to use J's to support the hull rather than a flat surface. If you had no problem then I doubt I will. I may grab a couple of blocks of foam (standard soft packing foam probably) and cut them to shape to help support, but thats the only difference I can see between what I had thought up and what you did. Looks great.
This is the best! I had purchased two pulley system kits, but didn't realize th ekits also require a bit of wall space. I went with the shelf bracket idea instead and had my kayaks on the wall in just a couple of hours - including hardware store and cleanup time. Much better!
This is an awsome idea. I was told to store the kayaks on side. My wife and I just bought our first {set} of kayaks after a weekend of renting them and barely living to tell about it... we want some touring kayaks and all we have right now are white water. Thanks for the great idea and if someone can tell me how to go about getting some used touring kayaks it will help a lot. they just don't seem to go for sale often.
If you are vigilant, you can find good deals on craigslist. After about a month I found the perfect touring kayak for me for $300 w/paddle.
We just bought 2 sets of Boat Bunkz from a guy who hand makes them in Florida. He was cheap and he matched them to our boats. I'm ordering another set for my brother. I think his web site is www.Boatbunkz.com
I have three 12' daggers. I bought six padded j hooks at Lowes for $8 each to hang mine on the wall of the gargage. They fit perfectly inside the coaming with no weight on the hull. So far so good. I've had them for 6 years.
I saw this as I was searching for a viable garage storage solution. The Boat Bunkz are nice, but not for the price plus shipping. I purchased the brackets and corresponding hardware to store two kayaks for about $30. This is a great idea!!! Thanks Mike!!!
Great idea. I went the local home improvement stores to with the intent of implementing your solution, but ended up finding some cheaper brackets that work even better. I have 2 kayaks at home that we wanted to put up on the garage wall. I purchased 4 "Heavy Duty Arm Hangers" (like J brackets) from HomeDepot for only $4 a piece. It says they each hold up to 50 LB (22.7Kg) work load, which more than covers the weight of our kayaks. The hangers came with screws and padding. Here's a link to a photo I took. Doesn't look like we'll need any bungee cords, either. So it was only $16+tax for my solution. Wouldn't have thought of it without your inspiration,Mike, so Thanks a ton!

Hi Paul, your bracket installation looks good. I'd probably still put some bungees on it if you have kids who might bump into them.
